Nakuru IAP in collaboration with Tymax Agibusiness solutions helped set up a dam liner demonstration at Boror, Kuresoi Sub-location on a 4 acre farm. The dam is expected to hold over 800,000 liters of water which can help irrigate the farm for atleast one cropping season.
The demo brought together more than 30 farmers from Boror farmers’ group who were also taught about the importance of using dam liners as well as setting up the liners.
The source of water for Boror farmer group is a stream that conveys water through gravity. The farmers are not allowed to close the water to avoid damage to the conveying pipes by accumulation of pressure. This leads to wastage, as a lot of water is lost when not in use. This makes lined water pans a very appropriate and important technology for that area to help store the water when it is not in use.
The farmers are also sub-contracted with Frigoken Company who were introduced to them by the Nakuru IAP to produce French beans as out growers for the company late last year. The farmers began harvesting their first crop from February this year and some of them have already received their payments. This initiative from Nakuru IAP has definitely helped the farmer group in improving their incomes and water productivity.
